Anthropic's race for computing power is not stopping even as the market starts to worry about spending. According to a Bloomberg report, Nvidia-backed British cloud company Nscale is in advanced talks on a second contract worth about $45 billion, covering another 460-megawatt building at its Monarch campus in West Virginia. The talks have not been finalized.

The first deal

In August Bloomberg and Reuters reported that Anthropic agreed to rent about 460 megawatts from Nscale at the same campus for six years, in a deal worth about $45 billion. The facility is expected to come online by late 2027 and use Nvidia's Vera Rubin chips. Neither company has formally confirmed the terms, and Anthropic declined to comment. Microsoft had earlier signed a letter of intent for the site but pulled out in the summer.

Hundreds of billions in one year

According to reports, this year alone Anthropic has signed computing deals worth at least $135 billion, including a $35 billion deal with Lambda, also backed by Nvidia. In several of these deals Nvidia does not just sell chips but helps assemble the entire financial structure.

Why it matters

Anthropic filed to go public last week, disclosing revenue of $16.3 billion in the first half alongside a huge accounting loss. Deals like these show how much money the race requires, and why the question of who funds the infrastructure build-out has become the central question of the AI market.
