OpenAI said yesterday it will acquire Pierre Computer Company, maker of Code Storage, a Git-based code storage service for apps, along with several open-source developer tools. Terms were not disclosed and the deal has yet to close; until then, the companies remain separate.

OpenAI plans to bring Code Storage's capabilities into Codex, its AI coding tool, and existing customers can keep using the service after closing. Two Pierre libraries, Trees and Diffs, already run inside Codex, and its open-source projects will stay open.

Why it matters: until now Codex helped developers write and fix code, but the code itself usually lived on GitHub, owned by Microsoft, OpenAI's biggest partner and investor. With its own storage layer, OpenAI moves closer to owning the whole development chain, and some commentators already frame the deal as a direct move against GitHub.

It is not OpenAI's first Codex-related deal this year: it also announced the acquisitions of Astral, maker of the Python tools uv and Ruff, and Ona, which provides cloud environments for AI agents. The coding race with Anthropic, whose Claude Code is especially popular with developers, keeps heating up.
