Google is changing the rules for schools on Google Workspace for Education: student access to Google Search will now be tied to the school's AI settings. A school that fully disables Google's AI tools will find its students have lost Search as well, seeing a message that it is unavailable instead of results.

Google's education VP Chris Phillips told The New York Times, according to reports, that Search and AI are deeply integrated and cannot be separated. Google also launched new Guided Learning features meant to make AI a study aid rather than a homework machine.

The move lands in a heated debate. In July, Common Sense Media rated Google's AI search features an 'unacceptable risk' for students, partly because in its tests AI Mode completed homework 180 out of 180 times, and over troubling answers to children in crisis. Google disputed the findings. Districts such as Frederick County, Maryland, have banned student AI use, and Los Angeles said it lacks the technical means to switch off AI summaries in Search.

Schools now face a binary choice: accept AI-enabled search or give up Google Search entirely. Critics call it pressure to adopt AI; Google presents it as completing an integration that has already happened.
